  • Must I sign up for long distance telephone service on my land line?

Posted by admin on March 30th, 2011 and filed under local telephone service | 3 Comments »

My landline is for exceptional and emergency calling only, and is always local. For long distance (either from my laptop or a landline) I use Skype. It seems to me that signing up with a LD carrier is a completely unnecessary redundancy.

Not only is it unnecessary, but if you DO choose a long distance company for that line, that long distance company will CHARGE you, even if you never make a long distance call!

They started doing that many years ago, and I called my phone company and told them to remove all long distance service from my phone and to put a note on my account to NEVER allow any long distance phone service on that line, even if some company claims I gave permission, because I will never give such permission.

If you need to make a long distance call, you can always use one of the thousands of 10-10 numbers. And by doing so, you can select different long distance companies for every single call.

Don’t let the phone company assign ANY long distance company to your land line, or you will be charged by them, even if you never make a long distance call!

Just as I completed a budget for a fiber optic communications start-up company, the idea of doing a wireless b?

Posted by admin on March 22nd, 2011 and filed under clec | 2 Comments »

Just as I completed a budget for a fiber optic communications start-up company, the idea of doing a wireless business model was introduced. I have some compare and contrast questions if I may.

    Questions:
1.How would you compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of fiber optic vs. wireless? (While I don’t know much, I am aware that fiber is used to get to the wireless tower.)

2.I need to know construction cost comparisons and time-to-complete comparisons (maybe not the specific dollar amounts as they may vary but maybe on a percentage basis one alternative is typically x% more costly to build than the other and/or x% more time consuming to complete that the other alternative).

3.Are engineering, permitting and any other pre-construction activities more costly or time consuming with fiber vs. wireless?

4.Compare and contrast annual maintenance costs for buried fiber vs. wireless.

5.Compare and contrast relocation costs for buried fiber vs. wireless.

6.Compare and contrast annual engineering, technician, installer, tester headcount and costs for buried fiber vs. wireless. How many heads per function for x number of sales per month of $6k or more per customer per month over a 5 or 10 year sales contract?

7.While wireless is encrypted, does wireless constitute a private network satisfying HIPAA and SOX the way fiber does?

8.For customers such as school districts, local/county/state governments, hospitals, and businesses, compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of fiber vs. wireless.

9.Operating as a CLEC, compare and contrast gross margin and net income for fiber and wireless for a customer base comprised of school districts, local/county/state governments, hospitals, and businesses where we own the fiber or wireless vs. where we buy circuits from the fiber owner (or wireless owner?).

10.What is the appropriate depreciable life of wireless assets? (for my fiber business model I used a 20 year life to depreciate the buried fiber). Is the tower depreciated over a different time frame than the fiber running to the tower?

11.What is the future demand for and obsolescence of fiber and wireless?

12.What are some high quality industry sources comparing and contrasting the advantages and disadvantages of fiber vs. wireless?

    Many Thanks!!!
Re Homework: I’m a newbie to the fiber/tech world and have questions I am trying to learn the answers to. As soon as I completed a budget for fiber I had a meeting in which wireless was brought up as an alternative to the (implied) more costly construction costs of fiber. If you or others have fiber or wireless experience, would appreciate any constructive input you have. Thank you in advance.

    Sounds like homework.

Is ACN a direct telecommunication service company for homes and business a scam company?

Posted by admin on March 18th, 2011 and filed under telecommunication | 2 Comments »

This company claims to provide phone, internet, and satellite TV at a discount price. Also, you can make money by becoming a independent representative of the company for a fee of $499.00.

It’s a pyramid scam. Don’t do it. The only way to make money from it is to harass other people into buying the ACN products or by convincing them to sign up underneath you so that you make money from their profits. People talk good about it only because they want you as a contact for them to sign up just so that they make more cash. It just keeps going and going and going.

What part does the UK play in making and using mobile phones?

Posted by admin on March 9th, 2011 and filed under mobile | 1 Comment »

What part does the UK play in mobile phones :
    - does the UK manufacture them/ make any parts of mobile phones?
    - does the UK buy the mobile phones?
    - does the UK buy the most amount of mobile phones?

Virtually all mobile phone manufacturing is done in China, Taiwan… places like that.

I don’t know of any British companies that design mobile phones, either. Nokia is in Finland. Ericsson is Swedish. Philips is based in the Netherlands. LG and Samsung are Korean. HTC is Taiwan. Motorola is based in the US.

UK does buy mobile phones. UK does not buy the most mobile phones - think about it - UK’s population is comparatively small.

How to connect mobile phone to external display or monitor?

Posted by admin on March 6th, 2011 and filed under mobile | 2 Comments »

Wondering if mobile phone can be connected to external devices like monitor, keyboard, and mouse. In short how to convert your mobile phone into ‘mobile’ PC?

To connect an external monitor to a phone, you need to have phone with tv out. For external keyboard, there are only a handful of smartphones that can connect to an external keyboard.
