Just as I completed a budget for a fiber optic communications start-up company, the idea of doing a wireless business model was introduced. I have some compare and contrast questions if I may.
Questions:
1.How would you compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of fiber optic vs. wireless? (While I don’t know much, I am aware that fiber is used to get to the wireless tower.)
2.I need to know construction cost comparisons and time-to-complete comparisons (maybe not the specific dollar amounts as they may vary but maybe on a percentage basis one alternative is typically x% more costly to build than the other and/or x% more time consuming to complete that the other alternative).
3.Are engineering, permitting and any other pre-construction activities more costly or time consuming with fiber vs. wireless?
4.Compare and contrast annual maintenance costs for buried fiber vs. wireless.
5.Compare and contrast relocation costs for buried fiber vs. wireless.
6.Compare and contrast annual engineering, technician, installer, tester headcount and costs for buried fiber vs. wireless. How many heads per function for x number of sales per month of $6k or more per customer per month over a 5 or 10 year sales contract?
7.While wireless is encrypted, does wireless constitute a private network satisfying HIPAA and SOX the way fiber does?
8.For customers such as school districts, local/county/state governments, hospitals, and businesses, compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of fiber vs. wireless.
9.Operating as a CLEC, compare and contrast gross margin and net income for fiber and wireless for a customer base comprised of school districts, local/county/state governments, hospitals, and businesses where we own the fiber or wireless vs. where we buy circuits from the fiber owner (or wireless owner?).
10.What is the appropriate depreciable life of wireless assets? (for my fiber business model I used a 20 year life to depreciate the buried fiber). Is the tower depreciated over a different time frame than the fiber running to the tower?
11.What is the future demand for and obsolescence of fiber and wireless?
12.What are some high quality industry sources comparing and contrasting the advantages and disadvantages of fiber vs. wireless?
Many Thanks!!!
Re Homework: I’m a newbie to the fiber/tech world and have questions I am trying to learn the answers to. As soon as I completed a budget for fiber I had a meeting in which wireless was brought up as an alternative to the (implied) more costly construction costs of fiber. If you or others have fiber or wireless experience, would appreciate any constructive input you have. Thank you in advance.
Sounds like homework.

I have a question for Yahoo Answers. I worked for a CLEC, named Globalcom, which was stationed here in Chicago. The CEO sold the company. The reason he stated for selling the company was that he simply lack the working capital to continue. He stated that you need roughly 100 million in yearly working capital to compete. In the telecommunications industry, given the new technologies of today and the giants such as AT&T, Paetec, would you agree that a CLEC would need that amount of yearly capital to continue?
To further give more information, Globalcom sold T1’s to small businesses in the Chicago land and suburbs, and nearby Wisconsin. They were acquired by larger CLEC that serves in Ohio, Mich, Penn, area, which sells legacy services.
Well. It depends on what services they are offering. A clec could be a local phone provider to a small town. Or leasing PBX’s to a university or large building is kind of a clec. How about a voip business solutions provider? All three of those business models could be sustained for a tenth of his estimate.
On the other side of the coin..
Offering telco, data and streaming mpeg to a national base - would require 10 times as much as he suggests.
I worked for a DSL provider called Rhythms years back. They went out of business in 03(ish).
Many in that company blamed our relationship with AT&T and support of their loops.
That’s the real riddle. How in the heck can a small company compete with AT&T or Verizon?
It’s tough. They are a monopoly and run by some of the most cut throat executives in business. Very politically active execs also.
I’m doing some looking for my boss because we are trying to find a field technician in the Boston or Worcester MA area and cannot find any qualified ones. So far most resumes on Monster or craigslist seem to be computer/IT people or behind a desk type support people. We are looking for a tech to be in the field installing internet and VoIP service for businesses and working in ILEC CO’s in a CLEC collocation environment. We are trying to find the perfect candidate before approaching HR as it will be an easy sell that way, which means we can’t post the job on any boards quite yet, at least not the national ones like Monster, CareerBuilder, or HotJobs. Any ideas where to find resumes/candidates?
hey telecom tech - it would be FT perm.
What kind of worker are you looking for ?
I *may* be interested.
FT / PT Longterm / Short
Is this sentence down below an example of parallelism?
My pencil makes the final kick to finish the last ‘c’; the word steadily echoes in the inner recesses of my mind…e-clec-tic.
wouldn’t it be…right?
because in the first part of the sentence the verb is makes and the in the second part of the sentence the verb is echoes.
can anyone help me clarify please?
thanks.
You would need at least two parts of the corresponding sentences to call it parallelism, but you have only one, and that is not even lexical, but purely grammatical. You need a mix of both in a sequence that occur in both clauses.

I would like to ask, is telecommunications sales to business a difficult job as I was offered a job with a clec. Is it hard to sell in NYC and what would i expect.
Thanks
Telecommunications sales can be a very easy thing to do, if you get involved with the right company. Selling it for someone else can be a very difficult thing, especially if they are limited to a curtain area or a curtain kind of telecommunications needs. I know a web site that you can take a look at that markets in all telecommunication needs. They are also a world wide company. The income you could make in this company is incredible. You wouldn’t be limited to just NY. I think this would be a perfect opportunity for you to capitalize in the money opportunity that this industry has to offer. Here is their web site www.tiffanyvague.acnrep.com If you’d like more information on telecommunications, you’ll have to contact them. Their contact is on the front page.
Good Luck!
