  • Fellow Canadians - need some help with Home Phone service providers?

Posted by admin on March 10th, 2010 and filed under home phone service |

I live in Ontario Canada, and would like to get away from Bell Telephone service. I find them to be very expensive and the customer service is terrible. We cannot get cable where we live, we have satellite TV and I believe DSL internet. I’ve looked into Magicjack, and comwave so far. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for cheap home phone providers? Has anyone actually used Magic jack?
    Much appreciated!

The problem with MagicJack is it is entirely dependent on having your computer running all the time, otherwise you won’t be able to make or take phone calls. To call it a home phone is a bit stretching it.

Comwave is a better option and quite affordable. For $10 a month you can get a basic home-phone service with unlimited local calling. It is worth noting that this is a VoIP service which means the calls are routed over your Internet connection to save money, but in every other way it’s just like a normal home phone.

Viatalk is another highly recommended VoIP service.
Edit: Sorry, I made an error. ViaTalk does not service Canada. You can still get outbound calling, but your incoming number would be for some city in the U.S.

This is what I was saying about ViaTalk:

For about $10.75 a month (on a yearly contract) you can get unlimited calling to Canada and the USA as well as all the extras (Caller ID, Call Waiting, VoiceMail) included.

As a limited time promotional offer, Via Talk will also include a second phone line free with your $10.75/mo service. That means you can have two independent phone calls at the same time.

As another bonus offer, you also get 60 minutes of free calling to most popular International destinations including Australia and the United Kingdom.

I use acanac VoIP. $10 or $12 per month for unlimited calling anywhere in USA and Canada. Works with your DSL connection.

Downsides are that you have to buy ($40?) and setup the VoIP router yourself, and pay a year in advance.

If you want home phone then stay away from MagicJack. Also I don’t think you can get a Canadian number from MJ.

I agree that the Mj has it’s issues but if your need is for a service that connects you to
your family and friends, then this might be the one to try, Sure it only has American registered numbers, and calls originating in Canada to your Magic jack would be long d.
Overall, I’ve used this device for the past two yrs. and I am Happy with it. I went to Bell Can. with a pricing complaint, and they lowered my monthly bill to ($27.00)
