We can no longer afford phone service, all we need is local calling basic who has the cheapest rates?
There is a big secret in the telephone industry, there is something called the tariff rate or metered calling. Phone companies do not advertise this. You have to insist with customer "no-service". This is regulated bu your Public Service Commission, check with them to see what your local provider is required to offer. You should be able to get local service with no frills for around $20.00 a month.

Set your priorities. Do you have cable or internet service? Cable company dial tone is about $25 a month. Cell lifeline service is probably $10 and you pay for all calls. There is a low cost broadband solution, like MagicJack or PhonePower, but they require internet service.
