BRING FRIENDS CLOSER TOGETHER WITH GO!MESSENGER
Video chat, voice chat and instant messaging for PSP

26th February 2008. Friends and Gamers can be that little closer together with the launch of Go!Messenger, the new wireless communication package for PSP™ (PlayStation® portable) from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) and BT.

PSP users can now keep in touch with each other, for free , from any wireless broadband internet connection. Go!Messenger will allow gamers to Video, Voice and Instant Message (IM) each other from anywhere in the world all from their PSPs. When connected to a Go!Cam, the attachable video camera and microphone for PSP, users also have the ability to make video calls to their friends and leave fun video and voice messages.

Go!Messenger has been developed in partnership with BT, allowing users to connect to wireless broadband at over 2,500 BT Openzone hotspots and in and around city centres. Users will have the freedom of a mobile phone except that through Go! Messenger all calls to other users are free1.

“With Go!Messenger, the PSP is pushing new boundaries, adding unique communication features to all the existing multimedia experiences,” said Stephane Hareau, PSP European Marketing Manager. “Enabling more than 11 Million PSP users across the SCEE region to communicate with each other, through Video or Voice chat, truly confirms the always evolving nature and potential of PSP.”

Warren Buckley, BT Group Director Mobility & Convergence said, “By working with PlayStation, BT is helping to consolidate PSP as a communications and entertainment device that will sit at the heart of a PSP user’s digital lifestyle. For the first time, the PSP community can stay constantly connected through voice and video chat and instant messaging both in and out of the home. We believe that this exciting development will only help SCEE to attract even more customers for the PSP.”

Policy analyst Derek Slater draws from the history of rural telephone cooperatives to question owning a personal internet connection. Slater lists three advantages to owning a personal connection.

    —–

Google Policy Analyst Derek Slater discusses the state of broadband policy in the U.S and the importance of sustaining the Internet as an open platform for consumer choice and end-user innovation.

Slater provides an overview of possible legislation to ensure robust access to the open Internet. He also presents two novel ideas that could help transform broadband policy in fundamental ways: customer ownership of last mile fiber, and Measurement Lab, a new research platform for broadband testing tools. - ociation for Computing Machinery

Derek Slater is a Policy Analyst on Google’s public policy team. He focuses principally on copyright law and telecom policy. Slater helped Vint Cerf found the Measurement Lab research platform and he coauthored the paper “Homes With Tails,” about customer-owned last mile fiber Prior to joining Google in September 2007, he was the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Activism Coordinator, helping the public take action to defend their digital rights. Slater joined EFF’s staff after graduating in January 2006 from Harvard College with a B.A. laude in Government. Slater was also a researcher at Harvard Law School’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society, becoming the first undergraduate to be named a student fellow and contributing to several papers on copyright law and digital media. He has also interned for Creative Commons and the Samuelson Clinic for Law, Technology, and Public Policy at UC Berkeley Law School. If Telecommunication is Such a Good Substitute for Travel

Posted by admin on July 15th, 2009 and filed under telecommunication | No Comments »

Since the dawn of recorded history, humans have devised means of communicating at a distance, and saving travel has been at least an implicit motivation for the creation of telecommunication technologies from the beginning. In recent years then, as information and communication technology (ICT) has gotten cheaper, easier to use, more effective, and more widely available, and as its use, therefore, has soared — surely its impact on congestion must be quite powerful by now? It does not seem so: travel by any measure continues to increase, and metropolitan congestion in particular shows little sign of abating. This talk explores a number of reasons for this counterintuitive result, and discusses the policy implications.
